The banks in US are the only financial institutions in major countries that are committed to keeping it around. Canada and Europe switched to smart chips years ago.

This is the same as the broadband debacle in the US. The refusal of corporations to upgrade infrastructure for the sake of cost saving is going to bite everybody in the ass in the long run.
