It had long been held illegal in the British Isles under Common Law before the Parliament abolished it in the West Indies in the 1830s.
Russia freed its serfs in 1861, by voluntary act of the Czar.
Most states in South America, in Europe, had ended slavery or serfdom before the second half of the nineteenth century.
It would hardly be proof of 'American exceptionalism' if we had ended slavery voluntarily.
If one were looking for proof the United States is exceptional, that we ended slavery only after a war was fought in which the slave-holding Confederacy was defeated, would seem to fit the bill....
