(18,219 posts)21. I am not a fan of McCain, but here are some reasons
that he is a war hero.
-He was shot down on his 22 mission, meaning he had succeeded 21 times prior to that.
-He survived over five years as a POW who had been tortured.
-He was offered release and refused to go unless the other prisoners were released as well. He did not think that his rank should give him special treatment.
Whether these actions are heroic or not is in the eyes of the beholder, although I will admit that I would have taken the offer to be released without blinking an eye. To stay is something more than I could see me doing, so maybe that is heroic.
