If we felt threatened in any way, lethal force was completely authorized and used without hesitation. I was an Infantry Platoon Leader for 13 months in Iraq and I know first hand what I'm talking about. I hate to say it, but more civilians were killed than I care to admit, we reported to our chain of command as they happened, and we never got in trouble.

In combat, our military wins, hands down, always. It gets tricky when the goal is nation building and not unconditional surrender or complete anhilation of the opposing force.

Dead civilians quickly destroys the trust we are hoping to build with the Iraqi people. With no trust, we have zero credibility with the people and the government we are attempting to prop up also has no credibility with the people it is hopefully attempting to govern.

An iron fist is not what you need in Iraq. 14 years of wasted lives and quagmire can attest to that.
