That our views about behaviors in public and private are still based on old moral notions about sexuality. It presents a question about the maturity of the society in general.

Does it really take that kind of value judgement, (for non-harmful preferences) in order to recognize a difference in personal predilections in private vs. the required decorum of public expressions and situations?

On the other hand, it has been obvious that the taboos, especially in the West, seem to have the effect of creating excitement, danger and various other motivations that may induce the behavior that is forbidden, but still that is a rather adolescent approach. I think we may be able to mature beyond that in regards to adult views on sexuality, though.

No offense, but the Catholic Church was probably one of the biggest promoters of sex in general by way of making it taboo and overemphasizing and promoting a relationship between the tribal notions of impurity and purity, etc. This was actually also a big misunderstanding of practices that were meant for more esoteric applications of spirituality and were phase specific. Also, repression generally does not work very well and can be rather unhealthy. It could be likened to putting your thumb over a garden hose to try and stop the water from coming out.
