(14,853 posts)IPA = India Pale Ale. It was created by Brits to help the beer from turning bad during long sailing trips to their colonists in India, since hops act as a preservative with anti-bacterial properties. (Definitely more important in the old days when extreme sanitation was harder to achieve.)
I'm not a fan of the sour styles either!
Some of the styles that I mentioned earlier, with yeast-dominated flavors, are very complex. They can taste fruity in a subdued way, so they're unlike the intentionally fruit-flavored styles. It was interesting to me how each drink could seem unique sometimes -- like apricots with one swallow, oranges the next, peppery the next, etc.
Hefeweizens usually have an undercurrent of banana flavor that I liked, but not strong like banana bread or whatever. And it was another style that had other flavors in the background.
