72. Karen Carpenter was initially a second fiddle to her brother, which you probably knew, but

in an informal recording session for Richard, in session bassist Joe Osborn's garage studio, the tag-along Karen sat in and played a little drums and sang a bit. Joe Osborn liked what he heard and passed the tape on to Herb Alpert. Alpert's buddy, producer, Lou Adler heard the demo and it was off to the races.

Fast forward a bit, in a recording studio, session drummer extraordinaire Hal Blaine liked what he heard but suggested Karen sing an octave lower. This was met with consternation from her controlling mother, but later in the session she did drop it an octave lower.... and the rest is history

Karen later went on to say, "The money is in the basement".

I guess it goes without saying, Joe Osborn played bass on all her recordings
