Even withhout pollution, our lakes, ponds, streams potentiallly make this a very unpleasant experience...
whether it be the horrifically toxic blue-green algae, the irritants from the slime from nonnative introduced zebra mussels, the protozoan parasites splashed in your mouth like Giardia or cryptosporidium... Then on shore the possibility of hookworm larvae from animals who have defocated in the sand and soil burrowing into those bare feet. Of course many lakes and streams/ponds (without much heavy livestock or other exposure) pose little risk of any of these things and most are treatable, if annoying or embarrassing (blue-green algae a more serious exception), but you don't have to tell your "naughty" teens that.
(you can keep your idyllic memories, however. I won't tell)
