I'm glad there was a good severance package. I was laid off in 2021 under similar circumstances, but there was no severance. Just a final paycheck and escort out the door after being watched cleaning out my cubicle.
They probably hired you for your experience to help guide and build your area of the company. Your pay was close to being commensurate with your graybeard status. Incredibly, this status also makes you a tempting target come RIF time.
