18. If you have furniture you love, get a good scratching post

We have one in every room and when we got out our new couches, the first corner they scratched, the scratching post went right by it. My cats sort of like an "entrance scratch" sort of I'm walkin in here now, I'll scratch, stretch and then lay down to sleep. The post didn't have to stay there forever, just until they associated scratching with the post.

I recommend the SmartCat Ultimate Scratching Post because it's tall enough for them to stretch. Some cats also prefer horizontal scratching pads or carpet covered places. They also like to be up high and look down or look out, so cat shelves or a cat tree are great, or a window seat for cats. As long as cats have an alternate place they are trained to scratch, they'll leave the furniture alone.
