(53,339 posts)The resemblance is striking. It was strictly a platonic friendship, but we were close. Joanne had a wonderful husband and kids back in NJ.
Working at the Wall, I got to meet and develop friendships with a lot of wonderful people like Joanne who had a connection there and often would return each year for the Memorial Day and Veterans Day observances. Those were special times when it was like a reunion and we all got to see each other again.
I always advised vets who weren't quite ready to make a trip to the Wall yet that when they finally were ready, try to do it during one of those two holidays when there would be plenty of brother and sister VN vets around and they'd have the benefit of a very supportive atmosphere for that very difficult first trip.
Joanne wasn't a vet--but she was family. A very special, wonderful, caring lady. We've lost touch now, but if I ran into her today it would be like picking up from yesterday...
