Grateful Dead - New Potato Caboose [View all]

One of Phil Lesh's first compositions for the Dead. He says in his book that he wasn't ready to sing it in front of an audience, so Bobby did the main vocal. It's not for everyone, as it's typical for the Dead circa '69, with strange lyrics and complicated chords and rhythm patterns. However, it shows cases Phil's musical talents, containing a rare lead bass half way through. The tune opens gently and and somewhat ethereally, then turns lyrical and raucous, evoking wistful musings of a heroic past fallen into ruins. The last half is a classic Dead jam where the entire band joins into musical journey.
