Jimi Hendrix’s guitar at center of Tucson lawsuit [View all]
The owner of a Tucson guitar shop faces a $750,000 lawsuit over a guitar once owned by legendary rock-and-roll musician Jimi Hendrix.
Rainbow Guitars owner Harvey Moltz says he paid $80,000 last year for the Black Widow acoustic guitar. But in an Oct. 2 complaint, the company that runs Hendrixs estate claimed Moltz is not the rightful owner of the guitar and asked a Pima County Superior Court judge to direct him to return the guitar and pay damages.
The guitar belonged to Hendrix at the time of his death in 1970 and went to his father along with the rest of the estate, the complaint said. When Hendrixs father died in 2002, he bequeathed the estate to Experience Hendrix LLC.
The guitar is priceless to our family, Janie Hendrix, sister to Jimi Hendrix and CEO of Experience Hendrix, said in an emailed statement. It is one of the few guitars that came home after Jimi passed away. We just want our guitar returned safely and back where it belongs.
