14. They grow rice because they have ridiculously cheaper water than the rest of us.

The only thing more insane than growing rice in the desert is how they got the water rights that gave them these sweet water rates:

The Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District (GCID) appropriative water rights begin on the Sacramento River with an 1883 filing posted on a tree by Will S. Green, surveyor, newspaperman, public official, and pioneer irrigator.  His first claim was for 500,000 miner’s inches under 4 inches of pressure and was one of the earliest and largest water rights on the Sacramento River.

So, because some dude nailed a piece of paper to a tree in 1883, huge agribusinesses, who now hold Will Green's old water right, get water at a tiny fraction of the cost that the rest of us pay.
