Latest poll finds Biden still leading Trump among Pa. voters, who also like Wolf's pandemic response [View all]

Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump 49% to 42% among registered voters in Pennsylvania, according to a poll released this morning.

That’s nearly the same as a month earlier, when a similar poll by the same organization, Franklin & Marshall College, found Biden leading 50% to 41%.

Also similar to last month: 59% of people who plan to vote for Biden say their vote is actually “against” Trump rather than for Biden.

Seventy-two percent of poll participants said they are “very interested” in the 2020 election, which is about the same as a month ago and similar to the same point in 2016, according to the poll authors.

The poll found that fewer supporters are undecided or supportive of a third-party candidate than in 2016. That’s potentially significant since a trio of third-party candidates in 2016, Gary Johnson, Jill Stein and Darrell Lane, took in 218,000 votes — considerably more than the 44,000 votes separating Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Among Republicans, 78% gave Trump a high job performance rating, compared with 33% of independents and 9% of Democrats.

The poll found that 48% percent of respondents believe Trump is better at managing the economy, compared to 44% who favor Biden.

But poll respondents gave the edge to Biden when asked about other issues. For example, on the matters of character and judgment, understanding concerns of ordinary Americans, and handling foreign policy, 50% or more said Biden would do better.

Similarly, only 30% said Trump has the best plan for the pandemic, and only 29% said he’s the most honest and trustworthy, with nearly half saying Biden is the most honest and trustworthy.

Less than one in ten voters have an unfavorable opinion of both Biden and Trump, or half as many as in 2016, when 16% disliked both candidates.

<snip>

The poll found major partisan differences regarding mail-in voting, with 52% of Democrats planning to vote by mail, compared to 84% of Republicans and 58% of independents planning to vote in person.
