18. I knew a woman, my neighbor, who went off the right-wing rails in the 60's. Didn't end well.

Yes, she was an evangelical and I did attend one church service with her in August 1968. The pastor voiced his happiness that Bobby had been killed and declared that this had saved America. He expressly supported George Wallace and Gen. Curtis LeMay in the presidential election. That was my first and last visit.

Moving into 1969 she became obsessed that the Russian invasion of America was imminent. She was into the Minutemen and the John Birch Society's American Opinion bookstores. She called the Birch Society phone line, which answered, "Let Freedom Ring." That phrase/song thereafter smells like Birch Society freaks, a la Hannity.

Cut to the chase, I watched her being taken out of her home in a straitjacket. Her daughter had her committed. She was back at home in 1970 after electroshock treatments with virtually no memory. Totally horrible.

This woman taught me a lesson about extremism that is still fresh after over 50 years.
