The second is happening as we speak. The economics of renewables are right now starting to pose a major problem for the profitability of centralized thermal. Wind and solar are becoming the least cost alternative and that diminishes the market share of the centralized thermal systems - meaning coal and nuclear are selling less power - meaning they have to charge more to meet their overhead - meaning the market position of renewables becomes even more attractive.
