was split off from the province of syria (along with the Palestine mandate) from the old ottoman empire, to reward the Hashamite rulers that were imported in from Saudi Arabia.

This is part of the reason why some in syria, believe in a 'greater syria' that encompasses Syria, Israel, WB, Gaza, Lebanon, Jordan.
