For some reason, the kidlet was saving her $45 ComiCon spending cash (earned through household chores) folded up on the coffee table for nearly a week and she and her friends spilled some buttered popcorn on it one evening. One $20, one $10, and three $5s
The kidlet woke up to a $5 with a bit nibbled off the corner, and 1/3 of a $20, with a few scattered bits on the floor.

It took two days, but we recovered most of the rest in the back yard. After hitting all the doggie remains in the back yard with a high powered hose to "find" and clean off most of the bits of bills, we put them through a good soaking in water and bleach and drying out in the sun. We were able tape up the bills into at least 3/4 status, and took them over to the bank to get replaced.. Most of the bits recovered were over a square inch, typically strips, so it wasn't too difficult. The $5 bills were the hardest to get together.

A box of disposable latex gloves is a must.
