(42,641 posts)If the owner has a handgun and keeps it in a safe or with a trigger lock, how long will it take the owner to:
1) recognize that there is an emergency and begin to react to the emergency?
2) find the gun?
3) remove the lock?
4) operate the gun? and
5) actually hit the target in a very stressful situation?
If the owner is carrying the gun and it has no lock, only questions 4 and 5 apply.
My father in law was a Chicago Police Dept. homicide detective and gun instructor. He liked to tell the story of a police officer and a civilian in a 12 by 14 room. !4 shots were fired by the two and neither was hit. He said that in his 30 year experience, very few officers could shoot well enough under stress with any accuracy. The key is stress. Many people can target shoot, but the target does not have a weapon.
