Rights are granted at the pleasure of government.
Under our system all rights are assumed to exist, except those that have been restricted through due process.
Two completely different views of the relationship between government and the people.

They were pretty stern and callous folks who didn't question slavery, prohibiting women from voting,

Benjamin had slaves. There weren't many of FF who did not have slaves. Few fought it at time.
