A quiet night ended for residents of a northern Santa Maria neighborhood Monday with a roar of sirens, a shouted exchange between an armed man and law enforcement officers, and staccato gunshots that ended with the man lying dead in the cul-de-sac at Preisker Lane and the Santa Maria River Levee.

Man shot and killed by officers identified
The Santa Barbara County Sheriffs Department has identified the man shot and killed by law enforcement officers Monday after he allegedly confronted them with a gun as 71-year-old Jose Naveja from Sebring, Fla.
Naveja reportedly led officers on a slow-speed pursuit through Santa Maria before he stopped and threw several guns from his car. He then allegedly exited his car, picked up a gun from the ground and confronted officers.
