BOXFORD Authorities say a man suffered serious injuries after he apparently shot himself in the chest while cleaning his gun yesterday evening.
It appeared that he was cleaning his pistol, and somehow it went off into his chest, said fire Chief Kerry Stickney, who was among the emergency responders on scene at 546 Main St. He was in the workshop, in his garage.
Stickney said the man was shot in the left side of his chest and characterized his wound as very serious. The man was transported to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was expected to undergo emergency surgery Tuesday night.
Police Lt. James Riter said police received the report of an older gentleman with a gunshot wound to the chest at 6:18 p.m. Radio reports at the time listed the man as conscious and breathing. Stickney said the mans wife made the call ...
