Seven people fatally shot by Baltimore police this year

... Anthony Guglielmi, the departments chief spokesman, said an officer responded to a report of a family disturbance at about 4:30 p.m. at a townhome in the 1400 block of N. Weldon Pl. The officer called out a Signal 13, for an officer in distress, and responding officers saw the suspect struggling with the first officer, with a knife nearby, Guglielmi said.
The responding officer fired at least once, striking the suspect, who was pronounced dead a short time later, Guglielmi said. The victim was not immediately identified.
Seven people have been fatally shot by city officers this year, two more than all of last year, and another man was wounded in a police-involved shooting. The ratio of fatal-to-non-fatal victims is unusually high in 2010, 10 people were shot by city officers, only two fatally ...

The Baltimore Police has had a seventh police-involved shooting this year. On July 31, at 4:40 p.m., police were called to the 1400 block of Weldon Place North in Medfield for a family dispute. When the officer arrived, he saw an altercation going on between individuals in the home. Johnathan Blankenship, a 40-year-old Caucasian man, then allegedly engaged the officer, who called for emergency back-up. When the back-up officer, John Hanyok, a 31-year-old Caucasian man who has been on the force since 2005, arrived, he saw the initial officer and Blankenship struggling on the kitchen floor. There was a knife nearby. The initial officer called for help and Blankenship was told to back away. Blankenship allegedly continued fighting with the officer, and Hanyok shot Blankenship, killing him ...
