How is racism alive and well in 2017? It is all about the money? WHAT?

last evening, a group of friends and I were chatting around a table about 'current events', mixed company...me the only POC, that made it mixed...started off with talk of the terrorist shooting in Las Vegas, lots of tut, tuts, empathy exclamations....but inevitably talk got around to racism and shooter and response to him as terrorist-maybe racist vs 'lone wolf'-crazy person. The shooter being Being from Mesquite, NV...I opted for racist, since that's clive bundy territory and one of the people started overtalking me with rising tension and volume that it is money that drives racism. I said it's tribal and skin color...his issues got in the way so much that I had to move away to prevent violence....I just can't handle this type of talk anymore...but just before I left I asked him, "what are you some kind of commie or something"? The people laughed but I let myself get too angry and had to leave. I always kind of trusted R...., not anymore....I guess he's berniebot max.
