Khris Davis' (Oakland A's) contract a head-scratcher, but he's content [View all]
Opinion by Bruce Jenkins, San Francisco Chronicle / 4-18-10
Throughout his tenure as the most productive home-run hitter in the game, Khris Davis has repeatedly stated his desire to remain in Oakland. Perhaps nobody realized just how strongly he feels about it.
In a transaction that had people wondering What the heck is he thinking? Davis signed a two-year extension with the As on Thursday for essentially the same salary hes making now. His 2019 contract is for $16.5 million, and the two-year extension total is $33.5 million.
Thats a stunningly good deal for Oakland, and wonderful news all around for the organization. And maybe its a little bit refreshing, Davis casting aside the big bucks for the sake of lifestyle and contentment. Remember, though, that since Davis joined the As in 2016, he has hit 143 home runs more than anyone in the big leagues.

Still, theres no question Davis settled for less without the slightest hesitation. Oakland is perfect for Khris, said a source close to the team. Hes actually lived in the city at times. He loves the vibe. He likes that its low-key and he goes under the radar. He doesnt care about accolades or money. He loves the team and his teammates. Hes a sweet, goofy, funny guy who knows where he is happy.

Can you put a price on happiness? Kris Davis apparently has, and it's a bargain, even at $33.5 million.
