play such a large role in the outcome of the two most important games of the year (to date).

It is a good way to get casual fans to tune out. And despite the good ratings that football gets, casual fans VASTLY outnumber die-hard fans.

All sports need to figure out how to find the right balance when it comes to enforcing the rules / having questionable rule enforcement affect game outcomes, but pro football is in a unique position vis-a-vis pro baseball, basketball, and hockey in that the postseason games are single-elimination.
