I opened Steam. I clicked on the top bar where it say's "Steam" in grey letters. It's the first option it also says "View Friends Games Help. Then I selected the second option from the menu which is "Go offline". I've since played in places where they have no wireless, as well as at home where I do. It appears it worked for me and it has also kept me from downloading the unwanted patch until they put out a fix.
If nothing else, it's worth a try.

As far as I can tell, you must be connected to Steam in order to play at all. n/t
