1. I remember watching an old landlord using a kitchen sponge to mop up the water flooding our basement

She was a very nice lady, and a good landlord. We were renting a tri-level from her, and two bedrooms and a bath were there on that lower level. We'd had a record setting rain and water was just coming up through the floor. She was not gonna stop that flood, nor was she doing much of anything to control it, but by golly, there she was on her knees with thsat little sponge. We let her keep on for as long as she was willing because, as she put it, doing something was making her feel better. Ultimately, they dug up around the foundation of the house and installed drain tiles and a bunch of external plumbing stuff to prevent another flood.

What we see now, is a similar type of situation. Change is flooding in and the ones attempting to stem the flood are just making a token attempt to suppress that. It might be making them feel better for now, but in the long run, but there will end up being no choice for anyone other than to fix the issues at their foundation.

For all of us living "the flood" it is maybe not gonna be terribly fun, and it is gonna be a trial to be survived--but ultimately, it will get better.

Sorry, that is maybe an off the wall way to express it, but literally, I was reminded of that as I read your OP.
