benotonite clay has a bit of 'cache' to it, as it is a rare and useful clay for potters. it has a tiny, tiny particle size, which gives it useful properties.
kaolins are appreciated because of their obvious purity. any clay would do the same, it just might have lead, etc. back yard mud would probably do the same, too.
