republicans' fault, to be sure, but we have way, way too many myths and indefensible things going on in politics.

the notion that someone has to believe in god or go to church or or talk about their spirituality is just one aspect of this.

right-wing rhetoric is full of make-believe and fiction backed by angry insistence that it's the indisputable truth, they their leaders are infallible, that they were delivered to us from god, etc. so even when they're not explicitly talking about god or religion, they're still using the same kind of reasoning that betrays that their minds are not open to even consider another view; and worse, that any other view is not merely different or even mistaken, that it is *evil*.

long way to go?

we've got a long way to go just to get to the point where politics is about actual policy discussions and not tribal mudslinging and name-calling and cheating and so on. wake me up when any rationality appears in the national debate in this country. maybe then we can think about an open non-believer running for potus. or at least someone who is "non-religious", which is a close to atheist as anyone dares get in politics here.
