Let's say you're self-employed, making $100k. If it works like the current payroll tax, a self-employed person is responsible for both the employer and the employee share of the benefit, which in this case totals 8.4%, or $8,400, which comes to $700 a month, which is higher than many (most?) individuals are paying now. But we don't know all the details yet...
