He put a face on "Compassionate Conservatism" that really resonated. People, for the most part, thought he was a half way competent adult with a large heart. Those of us who really paid attention fully understood that the fear was with Cheney and Rumsfield. Pre-911 Bush was much different than post-911 Bush. While the election results weren't simply accepted by all, they were by a strong majority.
