(11,417 posts)three civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi. They were trying to get AAs registered to vote. I use to go to Antioch University in Yellow Springs Ohio were the Freedom Summer folks were trained. I lived in Dayton. My friends an I were freinds with some of the students because we were high school guys and they liked to have us around.
We took part in a civil rights march there in the summer. A barber in Yellow Springs named Gegner would not cut the hair of AAs. That is what the march was about.
We were white guys in a civil rights march and stood out. We later could not buy anything in town because store owners would not sell to us.
I remember thinking that Freedom Summer folks were ready to die trying to vote yet there were no Black people to vote for. They were looking to the future of their kids not their own.
Today when I hear that young people don't vote because there is nothing to vote for it makes me sick!
On edit: my past in Yellow Springs does not make me anything better today as Bernie's marching with MLK make him anything better today. It's what we do today that counts.
