I am going to offer an unsolicited opinion.

I think one post in the lounge and one in GD would be okay. I would NOT kick it to death for more than a week.

I certainly would NOT post it all over DU like one of the recent fundraisers did.

If people want to help, they will. I would NOT berate anyone who asks for more information but I might be inclined to tell them in a personal message rather than in the thread.

I would keep in mind that while this is one big happy family, requests for strangers will be met with some skepticism. People all over need assistance at one time or another and there's nothing wrong with that. There was a local family where the husband had fallen off a roof and needed critical care. Family members first reached out to other family members and friends. While it may have been helpful, DU is not the first place I would expect a fundraiser for him to start. Does that make sense?

I've seen people get frustrated when the fundraiser has no end in sight. Likewise, I've seen frustration on the part of the person fundraising when they don't come anywhere near meeting their goals. The most successful ones I've seen are the ones where the goal is specific and for a short period (not raised every time the goal is met).

Personally, I wish Skinner would ban them again or at least offer some guidelines. But he is leaving it up to us to decide for ourselves.
