(15,235 posts)I was in line behind an older white man, wearing a cowboy hat, with a real period-looking handlebar mustache, at a tobacco store called the Smoke Signal on the Navajo Reservation. And the joker complained about being asked for his ID to a very polite Navajo woman. The woman informed him that she did not make the rules; and the sovereign Navajo Nation had responsibly derided to require everyone buying tobacco in their stores to present proof of age. After her response, I chimed in saying, "you sure are a sovereign nation; and its about time more recent land-owners realized the truth about America, and adopted responsible attitudes, like the original Native caretakers."
Then, cowboy said, "you better check his I.D. too." I look a little older than Mr. Cowboy. I was wearing my old Navy hat, with Vietnam aircrew wings attached to the top. After presenting my D.L, I paid far less than half-price, and the purchase was tax-free. After the purchase, I said that I was honored to be allowed to do business on their property. Then, she thanked me for my service. My only regret is that I didn't return thanks for her ancestral service, during WWII, when Marine Navajo Code-Talkers, actually beat the Nazis.
Who knows what an Enigma Machine was?
Anyhow, in New Mexico, I regularly meet both Navajo and the Pueblo people. In fact, the original care-takers of most of New Mexico were the Pueblo. Kit Carson herded the Navajo here on a VERY long walk, designed the exterminate the entire tribe.
We finally have two Native American women in the House of Representatives! It's about time isn't it?
primary today, I would vote for: Undecided
