(115,683 posts)I'd be surprised if someone who had pursued a professional career for five decades and also had a professional spouse didn't have a family net worth of at least $1M. Bernie should be a millionaire by now. Most members of Congress are; it's almost impossible to run for federal office these days if you don't have substantial assets to make up for the fact that you have to spend months, if not a couple of years, campaigning. Most financial advisors think that a couple will need at least $1M that much in order to live comfortably in retirement. The problem, as applied to Bernie, is that Bernie's mantra for years has been the evildoing of "millionaires and billionaires," and if he's revealed as one of them he might risk disillusioning his Purity Brigade whom he has convinced of the irredeemable evils of capitalism.
