The word afraid implies that there is another alternative, but it is riskier than the first.
Kinda like the poll I posted. Biden wins every state by a margin and the national vote by a margin greater than every other contender.
I'm afraid only Biden can win those 3 states, because that's what the polls show.
That also leaves plenty of other options to victory using other states. For instance, if another candidate can demonstrate greater strength than Biden in Florida, two of those 3 states become unnecessary for victory, "but I'm afraid we don't have a candidate that can demonstrate that better than Biden". Perhaps a candidate can prove that he or she can carry Arizona and Texas, and we don't need the mid-west, "I'm afraid we don't have that evidence to prove that theory". Same with North Carolina and Georgia.
The surest pathway to victory is a candidate that can secure all of the 2016 Hillary states and bring in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin. Show me that, and now you have a point.
