Merkel warns against trade barriers in face of coronavirus recession

BERLIN — Countries should not resort to renationalization and protectionism in response to a "deep global recession" caused by the coronavirus crisis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.

"It was ... clear that multilateralism faced a major challenge even before the pandemic, and this challenge has not become smaller," said Merkel, two days after she put forward a Franco-German plan for a €500 billion EU recovery fund.

Merkel was speaking after a videoconference with the heads of the International Labour Organization, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization at which they discussed the economic response to the crisis.

"The answer to the pandemic can certainly not be to renationalize all international supply chains now; then everyone would pay a very high price," Merkel said.

I Hope Biden Knows: Trump WILL Attack His Dead Son Beau in the Debates

This fall, with coronavirus resurgent, and body counts in blue and red states climbing, Trump's poll numbers will be in outright freefall. If Biden himself hasn't realized yet that Russian Agent Orange will go after Beau, I pray to the Gods & Goddesses there is someone sufficiently cynical on his campaign staff to tell him.

And if anybody here on DU has any contact with anyone on said staff, make sure he/she knows this!

New polls show trouble for Trump and Republicans in GOP strongholds

I don't consider polls to benews, because, when you think about it, they are the ultimate in OPINION reports. Now on to the story. . .

Just-released polls contain bad news for President Trump and his Senate allies, with Joe Biden expanding the electoral map to states that have long been safe bastions for the Republican Party.

Biden is solidifying his lead over Trump in Arizona, a state not won by a Democrat in a presidential race since Bill Clinton took it in 1996, according to a new survey by OH Predictive Insights. Biden leads Trump by 7 percentage points in Arizona. The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The same survey also had bad news for Senate Republican incumbent Martha McSally, who appears to be losing ground in her reelection bid against Democrat Mark Kelly. A former astronaut and the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, Kelly now leads McSally by 13 points. A month earlier, the same poll showed Kelly ahead by 9 points.

In Georgia, Biden leads Trump by a single percentage point, 48 percent to 47 percent, according to a poll conducted by Civiqs/Daily Kos that was released Tuesday and has a margin of error of 3.1 percent.
