(1,520 posts)Anybody who thought this would turn out any other way has been getting into their stash way too heavily.
There was no way the SC was going to rule against the ACA with everyone ( including a whole list of very nervous Republicans) pointing out that the law is working and economic devastation would result if it was overturned.
Not to mention that the credibility of the Supreme Court would have been forever compromised.
I still can't believe that they took the case, but from my understanding all it takes is a minority to vote to take a given case. Probably that three judge minority were the ones that voted to accept

(16,286 posts)I have financial reasons to need to be prepared for that, and the worst I think of something as an outcome the happier I am when it goes the right way.
I am surprised by the 6-3 vote, too.
Celebrate!

(35,699 posts)Oh we're meeting at the courthouse at eight o'clock tonight*
You just come in the door and take the first turn to the right
Be careful when you get there, we'd hate to be bereft
But we're taking down the names of everybody turning left
Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society, help us fill the ranks
To get this movement started, we need lots of tools and cranks
Now there's no one that we're certain the Kremlin doesn't touch
We think that Westbrook Pegler doth protest a bit too much
We only hail the hero from whom we got our name
We're not sure what he did, but he's our hero all the same
Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Socialism is the ism dismalist of all
Join the John Birch Society, there's so much to do
Have you heard they're serving vodka at the W.C.T.U.
Well you've heard about the agents that we've already named
Well M.C.A. has agents that are flatly unashamed
We're after Rosie Clooney, we've gotten Pinky Lee
And the day we get Red Skelton won't that be a victory
Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Norman Vincent Peale may think he's kidding us along
But the John Birch Society knows he spilled the beans
He keeps on preaching brotherhood, but we know what he means
We'll teach you how to spot 'em in the cities or the sticks
For even Jasper Junction is just full of Bolsheviks
The CIA's subversive and so's the FCC
There's no one left but thee and we, and we're not sure of thee
Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Here to save our country from a Communistic plot
Join the John Birch Society, holding off the Reds
We'll use our hands and hearts, and if we must, we'll use our heads
[Background]
O beautiful, for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain
[Spoken]
Do you want Justice Warren to be your Commissar?
Do you want Mrs. Khrushchev in there with the DAR?
You cannot trust your neighbors, or even next-of-kin
If mommy is a Commie then you gotta turn her in
Oh we're the John Birch Society, the John Birch Society
Fighting for the right to fight the right fight for the right
Join the John Birch Society, as we're marching on
We'll all be glad to see you when we're meeting in the John
In the John, in the John Birch Society

(6,917 posts)I remember driving through Alabama in the 1960s on family vacations and saw those signs "IMPEACH EARL WARREN". I still remember how, as a kid, I had no clue who Earl Warren was and why they wanted to impeach him. LOL

(184 posts)They are going to call him a "coward." Yet it must have taken a lot of courage to vote this way knowing the back lash he was going to get from conservatives. What a spiteful bunch the Republicans are. Maybe Roberts will flip and become a liberal judge going forward. That would be a nice change.

(81,238 posts)somewhere out there? Seriously? Astonishing! And DEEPLY gratifying!!!!!
The really funny thing is - those even more relieved than we are? The CONS themselves! Because they knew they were gonna be left holding the bag if they managed to see to it that the ACA was torn down, this way. They were gonna be left holding the bag - which had NOTHING in it. NOTHING. They only wanted to see the ACA destroyed, taken down, dismantled, done away with. This bullshit they were flinging about "repeal and replace" - BULLSHIT. PURE BULLSHIT. They were only EVER going to go halfway on that. They were eager to tackle the "repeal" part. Couldn't wait! But the "...and replace" part? Fuck it. There was NEVER any way they were EVER going to find time to get to that part of it. NEVER. Something else was ALWAYS, VERY conveniently, going to get in the way and they were going to be sure NEVER to get for it. They never EVER intended to figure out something to replace the ACA with to help people. Because they don't want to help people. They're the "yer on yer own" party. They're the "Sucks to be You" party. They're the "IGMFU" party - "I Got Mine, F-U."
And the public WAS gonna be screwed and left high and dry. Thrown to the wolves. Just the way the CONS like it. Because when you get down to the basics of it, THEY DON'T WANT TO HELP ANYBODY. And they SURE as hell don't want to HAVE TO help anybody. They don't want to be compelled to have to help somebody. They're the Party of Cain. Cue the WAAAAAAMbulance - "WAH! Am I my brother's keeper? Do I HAVE TO be????? I don't wannna!!!!!"
Funniest thing of all is, LET 'em call the WAAAAAAAAMbulance. The ACA will probably help them pay for it!

(13,058 posts)IMO it was purely politics. Both were smart enough to realize that the wrong decision would have doomed GOP chances in 2016. If that were not the case there is no doubt in my mind that they would have gone the other way. And once the 2016 election is settled look for them to veer back to the right.

(659 posts)They did the right things for all the wrong reasons. They couldn't care less about the insurance status of millions of Americans. The thinking here was that if they took out Obamacare, then the fuming masses who FINALLY had semi-decent health coverage were going to rightly look at the group that took it away for answers.
Republican presidential candidates have been dreading this going the other way for a while. They were terrified millions would lose their health insurance because they have no story to tell regarding what they would do differently. Hillary and Bernie do. Hillary came out for single payer in 2008 and we all know where Bernie stands. So all those people who would have gotten screwed would have had a choice between a party with candidates who had a clear vision on middle class-friendly health care and a party that never says anything but tort reform.
Scalia, Thomas, and Alito just continue to prove that it doesn't matter what the issue is, they refuse to go against orthodoxy no matter who it kills. It's unbelievable that three such sociopaths could even stay out of jail much less end up on the Supreme Court.

Let's keep pushing toward medicare for all, a single payer system. Lower medical costs. Take the profits out of health care.
