They badmouth California because it's a blue state.

They hunger for it and they can’t have it. And they know it and it just kills them. California is majority blue. It votes for DEMS. It’s got the biggest population in the country and the biggest haul of electoral votes - which I believe are awarded winner-take-all. So that’s a block of 50-plus (54? Or maybe 52 or 53 now with reapportionment, because CA lost one or two) that they CRAVE - and can’t have - at least so far. In national elections, California gets you a full quarter of the way home, singlehandedly. And that’s simply by the numbers. We aren’t even talking ego gratification and bragging rights.

So they respond like the typical spoiled-sport on the playground who got punched and knocked down, and then claimed the kid who did the punching didn’t really humiliate him in front of all his friends. They LONG to own California. And it’s out of their reach. And it will remain that way for the foreseeable future, as long as the demographics hold they way they have been.
