calimary
calimary's JournalNuns mostly. But there was also Father Flanagan.
I've posted about him before - coming by to conduct catechism class every now and then. I had trouble accepting a lot of what he said, particularly when he'd opine about families and marriages and all that. I found myself thinking - "how the heck do YOU know? You're not a dad! You're not a husband! You don't go out to work every day to bring home the money to buy us food and laundry detergent and so we can keep the car running. You don't have kids to support or a marriage to keep solid. How on earth can you sit there and tell us how it's supposed to be?" Never did get past that, either. Still feel that way.
Truly!
Actually, I kinda like knowing ahead of time! Spoilers don't bother me a bit - I welcome them. But then again, every time I'd acquire a fiction novel, I ALWAYS turn to the end of the book and read the last chapter to find out what happens. To me, it enhances the rest of the reading from the beginning to the end. I don't chew my cuticles. I know what's gonna happen. It's FICTION forcryingoutloud! I don't like surprises. I don't really like suspense. I want to know what happens! Doesn't ruin ANYTHING for me!
SHEESH - life presents enough drama and mystery and suspense as is! Seems to me, anyway. You're not allowed to know what's gonna happen in the future, or how everything will turn out. Not even if you go to a psychic. That's enough suspense for me. On the other hand, if it involves circumstances in which I have some control - damn straight I'm gonna flip to the end and find out what happened! And if somebody wants to let slip who wins - I don't care! I rather like knowing ahead of time. I prefer it!
And for heaven's sake - it's just a game!!!!!!! (As you can probably tell, I'm not into sports that much, either. I'm glad everyone's having a wonderful time watching all the soccer games! I'm glad it's an event! Very cool! And I don't see anything un-American about it either. But it's just a GAME!!!)
Love you, nadin! Wherever you are! With my greatest respect to my fellow DUers, I just don't see what all the fuss is about.
Freedumb indeed.
It always sends me to the same thought...
"President Obama doesn't want to come and take yer damn fucking guns. I do!"
Spoken as a mom. When the kiddies couldn't or wouldn't play nice with their toys, those toys got TAKEN AWAY.
Yeah, same here. That's the first thing I thought, too, but I assumed because it's posted here, that
there would be a deeper and different context. It DID make me want to read further.
And get my heart broken yet again.
By all these DAMN gun stories and the sadness and devastation they include.
And it allows me to kick this worthy thread.
DAMN GUNS. DAMN THEM TO HELL.
He certainly does!
From the second page:
The model for us rich guys here should be Henry Ford, who realized that all his autoworkers in Michigan werent only cheap labor to be exploited; they were consumers, too. Ford figured that if he raised their wages, to a then-exorbitant $5 a day, theyd be able to afford his Model Ts.
What a great idea. My suggestion to you is: Lets do it all over again. Weve got to try something. These idiotic trickle-down policies are destroying my customer base. And yours too.
Its when I realized this that I decided I had to leave my insulated world of the super-rich and get involved in politics. Not directly, by running for office or becoming one of the big-money billionaires who back candidates in an election. Instead, I wanted to try to change the conversation with ideasby advancing what my co-author, Eric Liu, and I call middle-out economics. Its the long-overdue rebuttal to the trickle-down economics worldview that has become economic orthodoxy across party linesand has so screwed the American middle class and our economy generally. Middle-out economics rejects the old misconception that an economy is a perfectly efficient, mechanistic system and embraces the much more accurate idea of an economy as a complex ecosystem made up of real people who are dependent on one another.
Which is why the fundamental law of capitalism must be: If workers have more money, businesses have more customers. Which makes middle-class consumers, not rich businesspeople like us, the true job creators. Which means a thriving middle class is the source of American prosperity, not a consequence of it. The middle class creates us rich people, not the other way around.

Welcome to DU, Crowquette!
Good to have you with us! This is a good start. But it's only a beginning. They have such a big lead on us - one they've been building and carefully tending for at least three decades. Ever since the rise of the cancerous tumor that was ronald reagan. We've got a LOT of work to do. In EVERY direction and at EVERY level.
Welcome to DU, ProgressiveJarhead!
Glad you're here! Pre-emptive! Good work! Pox Noise is truly that: a POX on - (forgive me, but I don't think it's an overstatement anymore) ALL of humanity! They give air time, face time and presumed "credibility" to the flat-earthers and know-nothings and science-deniers and other proudly ignorant views, thus helping them spread. And with that kind of "mentality" governing, the survival of our very PLANET is now threatened. Many of them think Jesus will magically come down and wave some magic wand and fix everything that they broke, poisoned, polluted, killed, squandered, and otherwise fucked up. Reminds me of the Biblical accounts of the Israelites (as I was taught anyway) who had a Messiah actually standing in their midst and didn't accept Him. Seems to me they wanted some big fat powerful celestial Warrior-King galloping into town in a fiery chariot pulled by teams of golden horses, with a crown on His head and a blazing sword in His grip. I think their "latter-day descendents" if you will - expect the same kind of thing. A Savior in THEIR image, according to THEIR definition. A punishing, vengeful God-figure coming down like some Heavenly Cleaning Man to sweeten the waters, the soil, and the air that's been fouled, fix the broken everything, and clean it all up for them and usher them into His Kingdom because they're so deserving.
I hope there are legions more cases like this, where people are starting to wake up from the Pox Noise stupor. Some of them are indeed doing so. But it's not happening fast enough, or on a large-enough scale. And the same thing should be happening to hate radio, but after years of boycotts and more than 3,000 sponsors pulling out from the limbaugh show, he's still on - alive and well.
We've got a LOT of work to do - to rescue our country from these delusional assholes.
Here:
I know it's another thread of mine, but I found this comment on Daily Kos, and I want to make sure everybody here can see it. Our side has been asleep. And dropped the ball. We're only now waking up to the enemy onslaught that has been allowed to grow and metastasize like a cancer for at least 30 years. At least since the reagan era. And so much damage has been done, unabated and unchecked and unrestrained, that I honestly don't know if some of it can be undone - at least not anytime soon!
The bad guys have been hard at it for years now. Not just nationally but AT THE STATE LEVEL. They listened to ralph reed and his advice about starting at the school board level and working one's way up - while our side snickered and scoffed and then rolled over and went back to sleep. Our side thoroughly underestimated the resolve and energy and vigor of the enemy. And we're pretty badly screwed. I don't see a way out of this unless the baggers secede from the GOP and form their own party - which would confuse the hell outta that side and split up the vote into constant Spoiler-ville - which could get us Democratic majorities again. But that's the only way I see that can work. Please consider the link here:

We need beefing up all over. It's only now started. We have a somewhat flabby cable network that is NOT liberal 24/7/365, but it's the best we've got. We have the internet that is now threatened. We have the detestable Citizens United working against us. We have unions on the ropes - and that was at one point a source of strength, and funding, too. We have regulations rolled back all over the place. We have AT LEAST 30 YEARS of catching-up to do. All that ground we gained, all the progress we initiated, all the forward motion we fought for - much of it is gone. The enemy has a HUGE and now quite solid head start. We have a hard struggle ahead. And we can't afford to relax and roll over and go back to sleep! That means the enemy gains more ground and then wins outright. Hell, at this point, our very PLANET is at risk because this shit has been allowed to metastasize!!!
As I said in a post on that thread above - WHERE is Howard Dean when we need him? Where are the Howard Dean-type thinkers and strategists? WHERE is the "50-State Strategy" mentality when we need it? As long as Beltway bozos like Debbie and friends are running things, we're screwed, long-term.
And after they take away our reproductive rights - just watch. Our voting rights will be next.
There actually are people out there who think most of the trouble in this country began when women won the right to vote. Astonishing!!!! I mean, why should they stop at birth control? And who else's rights will be taken or eroded after that?
If I were in the gay community, I'd already be worried. And be PLANNING. LGBT Friends: DO NOT think you're home free on this! DO NOT let down your guard! DO NOT assume they won't be back to fight you and screw you over another day. DO NOT assume for one nanosecond that it's time to relax and become complacent, that your rights are widely acknowledged and protected now, and that you can relax in the confidence that this is settled now. Your fight is NOWHERE NEAR over. They're gonna come back - again and again and again. Just look at the template we all have to study from now: ALEC. Watch 'em like hungry hawks. And be ready.
Take a hard, cold lesson from what's happened to us women on the pro-choice front. Roe v Wade has been whittled away and chipped away and weakened and compromised until it is now on the ropes. How many women have YOU personally heard, either among friends or in the news - "WHY are we still fighting this? I thought this was settled!" How many times have you heard that just in the last year?
Take a hard, cold lesson from what's happened to the right to vote. How many blacks have you seen, either in news coverage or maybe you know some of them, who have been voting literally for decades and now, all of a sudden, there are all kinds of new complications and obstacles thrust in their way. HOW MANY TIMES have you heard or seen this, just in the last year?
DO NOT GET COMPLACENT!!!! You will live to regret it. THEY do not consider this over. Why should you? They'll be back - GUARANTEED. Until they get THEIR win on this, and unfortunately, these assholes don't give up. Which means - NEITHER SHOULD WE!!!!!!
