Woman tosses Molotov cocktail into Fla. Citizenship office

A woman tossed a lit Molotov cocktail into the lobby of a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Oakland Park, Florida. But no major injuries were reported, according to a report of the incident sent to administration officials and viewed by The Associated Press.

The woman walked into the office Friday afternoon and hurled a bottle filled with gasoline and a lit fuse. But the fuse disconnected from the bottle and didn't ignite, according to the report. Law enforcement officials believe she intended to cause harm but the incident wasn't related to other incidents where Homeland Security agencies were targeted.

The incident comes amid federal investigators' growing concerns about attacks on immigration agencies during a time of heightened emotion and scrutiny. The issue remains a political powder keg for both Democrats and Republicans as Trump continues to push for major changes on his signature issue and tries to energize his base by delivering on campaign promises.

A Homeland Security official condemned the attack and urged the public to express themselves peacefully and respectfully without trying to harm people. The official, who was not authorized to discuss an internal incident, spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity. The official said the attacks were unacceptable.

Radar finds more than 120 coffins buried beneath Tampa apartment complex

Zion Cemetery has been found.

Ground-penetrating radar has detected what appear to be more than 120 coffins under an apartment complex in Tampa, the remains of the lost cemetery revealed by the Tampa Bay Times.

The 2½-acre, segregation-era burial ground, believed to be the city’s first for African-Americans, was established in 1901 along the 3700 block of Florida Ave. and extended back around 400 feet.

It disappeared nearly a century ago when the land was parceled off for white developments.

Trump declares new Space Command key to American defense

Source: AP

Declaring space crucial to the nation's defense, President Donald Trump said Thursday the Pentagon has established U.S. Space Command to preserve American dominance on "the ultimate high ground."

"This is a landmark day," Trump said in a Rose Garden ceremony, "one that recognizes the centrality of space to America's national security and defense."

He said Space Command, headed by a four-star Air Force general, will "ensure that America's superiority in space is never questioned and never threatened."

But there's still no Space Force. Space Force, which has become a reliable applause line for Trump at his campaign rallies, has yet to win final approval by Congress.

Shoves, brawls and shouts: Welcome to Costco's Opening Day in China

The United States and China may be involved in a trade war, but the Chinese shoppers at an American wholesaler were at war with one another this week, in a pitched battle complete with pushing, brawling and meat cleavers.

The opening of the first Costco store in China, in the commercial capital of Shanghai, was a scene of chaos. Shoppers lined up for hours to get into the store upon opening, ducking under the roller door as it inched up from the ground.

They fought over Birkin bags and Moutai liquor. They wrestled for detergent and grabbed at a piece of pork with their bare hands, even as the butcher was trying to cut it. There was a three-hour wait for a space in the parking lot, and sometimes longer in checkout lines.

By the afternoon, the store was in such chaos that it had to close early. “Please don’t come,” Costco said in an alert sent to members, who paid $28 to join for a year.

Retailers howl as U.S. trade agency locks in 15% tariffs on September 1

Source: Reuters

The Trump administration on Wednesday made official its extra 5% tariff on $300 billion in Chinese imports and set collection dates of Sept. 1 and Dec. 15, prompting hundreds of U.S. retail, footwear, toy and technology companies to warn of price hikes.

The U.S. Trade Representative's office said in an official notice that collections of a 15% tariff will begin at 12:01 a.m. EDT (0401 GMT) Sunday on a portion of the list covering over $125 billion of targeted goods from China.

This initial tranche includes smartwatches, Bluetooth headphones, flat panel televisions and many types of footwear.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection will also start collecting a 15% tariff on Dec. 15 on the remainder of the $300 billion list, including cellphones, laptop computers, toys and clothing, USTR said in the Federal Register filing.

Trump slams Puerto Rico as impending storm intensifies

Source: CNN

President Donald Trump is already picking a fight with Puerto Rican officials as a tropical storm barrels toward the island, showing insensitivity to Americans still recovering from one crisis and facing another.

"We are tracking closely tropical storm Dorian as it heads, as usual, to Puerto Rico. FEMA and all others are ready, and will do a great job. When they do, let them know it, and give them a big Thank You - Not like last time. That includes from the incompetent Mayor of San Juan!" Trump tweeted from the White House Wednesday morning.

Later Wednesday, he continued to slam the territory's government and praise himself.

"Puerto Rico is one of the most corrupt places on earth. Their political system is broken and their politicians are either Incompetent or Corrupt. Congress approved Billions of Dollars last time, more than anyplace else has ever gotten, and it is sent to Crooked Pols. No good!" he wrote, adding, "And by the way, I'm the best thing that's ever happened to Puerto Rico!"

Rep. Omar decries hate after death threat in which writer vowed to shoot her at Minnesota State Fair

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Wednesday denounced hate and publicized an anonymous death threat that she received in which the writer claimed that “a very capable person with a very big ‘Gun’” would shoot her at the Minnesota State Fair.

The freshman lawmaker called attention to the threat hours after Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore urged her to “go back to Somalia.” The Alabama Republican Party has called for her expulsion from the House.

“I hate that we live in a world where you have to be protected from fellow humans. I hated it as a child living through war and I hate it now,” Omar said in a tweet. “But until deranged people like this stop threatening my life and the lives of others, I have to accept the reality of having security.”

The congresswoman was responding to a photo taken by a Pacific Standard columnist that showed her speaking at a podium at an event in Minnesota with a bodyguard standing directly behind her.

The 'Fastest Woman on Four Wheels' dies in crash

Jessi Combs was nicknamed the “fastest woman on four wheels.” She died Tuesday in Oregon in a jet-powered car trying to become faster.

The 36-year-old earned her nickname by breaking records. In 2013, she broke a 48-year-old mark when she reached 393 miles per hour in her North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger. She set another record in 2016 when she drove nearly 478 mph, her fastest speed, in the same desert where her life ended.

Combs had attempted to beat her own speed before. In a September Instagram post, Combs said she reached a new top speed of 483 mph. “Unfortunately a piece of debris was sucked into the turbine intake. There is minimal damage, though game over for now," she captioned a picture of herself smiling in aviator glasses. “Looking forward to the next attempt of ludicrous speed.”

Tuesday’s attempt resulted in a 911 call to the Harney County Sheriff’s Office around 4 p.m., according to KTVZ in Oregon. The sheriff’s office and the Bureau of Land Management are investigating the crash.

Donald Trump Has Worn Us All Out

Donald Trump’s presidency has baffled me, enraged me and above all saddened me, because I’m a stubborn believer in America’s promise, which he mocks and imperils.

But last week his presidency did something to me that it hadn’t done before. It absolutely flattened me.

I woke up Saturday, made my coffee, shuffled to my computer, started to glance at the news and suddenly had to stop. I couldn’t go on. Trump had yet again said something untrue, once more suggested something absurd, contradicted himself, deified himself, claimed martyrdom, blamed Barack Obama, made his billionth threat and hurled his trillionth insult.

That was all clear from the headlines, which were as much as I could take. He had commandeered too many of my thoughts, run roughshod over too many of my emotions, made me question too many articles of faith.
