Is it true that, after seeing Kevin McCarthy's recently demonstrated prowess as a sprinter,

Adidas and Nike are engaged in a bidding war to secure his endorsement of their running shoes?

February 9, 2022

Yesterday I noted what I saw as an increase in cynicism on DU and wondered aloud if maybe I was not

cynical enough. I said I'd have to think about that . I have.

I think we have had an excess of cynicism lately and I do not want to add to it.

Sure, everyone has a down day now and again and most of us have occasionally vented our frustration in a negative way, but constantly posting that "the sky is falling and we're all screwed" does nothing to help US and it probably just tickles the livin' crap out of THEM.

I am not at all suggesting we should not passionately discuss what we see as problems. Let's just not pretend that what we BELIEVE is what we KNOW, however well-intended that belief may be.

We have some outstanding people who are working their butts off to accomplish goals all of us share. And, I think the majority of our fellow citizens are "good people"; they are honest, decent, hardworking folks who just want a level playing field and a just society. In other words, despite how the cable shows and blogs and even some here may choose to assess our situation, there are more of us than them and we are on the right side of history.

That's how I see things.

Watching the news last evening, Mrs. A turned to me with a puzzled look on

her face and asked: "is it possible that McCarthy is dumber than he looks "

More proof that I "married up".

I fault myself for lapsing into cynicism too often, but I am a "piker" compared to

some of our crew here tonight.

Maybe I'm not cynical enough. I'll have to think about that.

Who is the Democratic senator who "does not expect" Trump to be prosecuted

for tearing up and stealing government documents. This was just mentioned on Lawrence's show.

While I consider any anti-Trump voices welcome, I find the former Republicans more

than a little difficult to accept at face value.

I'm admittedly biased and occasionally fit the "curmudgeon" stereotype for old white guys, but with the ex-GOP stalwarts, I can't get past "Where did you have your head stuck these past several decades?"

They did not know that a large percentage of their party was racist? Misogynistic? Homophobic? Antisemitic?

They did not know that the Limbaughs, Becks and Hannitys were simply nasty cheerleaders for the dregs of our society?

They did not know about the mean-spirited lies and hypocrisy and greed that have been the foundation of the "Grand Old Party" since Goldwater and Nixon and Reagan and Gingrich?

NOW they're ashamed?

I do believe in forgiveness and second chances, but it will take more than a sudden "one-eighty" to persuade me that either is yet merited.

"Depend upon it, sir, when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight,

It concentrates his mind wonderfully. -----Samuel Johnson

I am sure the above is true: the prospect of death in the near future would cause most of us to "prioritize" what time we had left. I am sure we would all have somewhat different "before I kick the bucket" lists, but wouldn't we all want to be sure that everyone we love knows that we love them?

Maybe that's something we should take care of now---just in case "tomorrow starts without us".

Thank you to whoever the kind soul is who gave me a heart. I am always a little embarrassed

by them and don't really know how to respond except "thanks!"

February 7, 2022

Remember those "wild-eyed kooks" who made those "rash and divisive" predictions a few

years ago that if Trump lost the 2020 election he would not go peacefully, would never concede and would never cooperate with a peaceful transition of power?

Some of the same "kooks" are now predicting that Republican state legislatures and election officials will simply override any outcome that does not favor Trump and "install" him back in office in 2024.

Boy oh boy! SOME PEOPLE, huh?
