Third night of violence in Barcelona after jailing of Catalan separatists

Source: The Guardian

Street violence escalated in Barcelona late on Wednesday, as protesters set cars on fire and threw acid at police officers in a third night of unrest following the imprisonment this week of nine pro-independence leaders for their roles in the failed 2017 push for regional independence.

Officers from the Catalan force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, were reported to have fired teargas and run over two protesters during clashes that quickly spread after a earlier demonstration turned into a series of running battles with police.

Police claimed that projectiles had been fired at helicopters.

Roger Torrent, the speaker of the Catalan parliament, condemned the violence, tweeting: “These actions don’t represent us. We must distance ourselves from violent behaviour.”

Scotty Bowers, sexual procurer for Hollywood's closeted stars, dies at 96

Washington Post

Scotty Bowers, who claimed to have been one of Hollywood’s most infamous hustlers and procurers, arranging illicit liaisons with both straight and gay film stars, often taking part in the sexual high jinks himself, died Oct. 13 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 96.

The death was confirmed by filmmaker Matt Tyrnauer, who made a 2017 documentary about Mr. Bowers, “Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood.” He did not specify a cause.

From the time he arrived in Hollywood in 1946, fresh out of the Marine Corps, Mr. Bowers became an active and, by his own account, eager participant in the film world’s underground sex life.

His first encounter, he said, came when he was pumping gas on Hollywood Boulevard, and a well-dressed man drove up in a Lincoln.

A friend of mine did the film editing for his bio-pic:

Challengers raise cash to take on congressional incumbents in NYC

Politico

Challengers to several members of New York City's congressional delegation have brought in substantial fundraising hauls, according to records filed this week with the Federal Election Commission.

Prominent Democratic incumbents including Reps. Eliot Engel, Jerry Nadler, Carolyn Maloney and Yvette Clarke have all drawn challengers running as insurgents, seeking to repeat the upset that propelled Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to victory over former Rep. Joe Crowley last year.

In Brooklyn, Clarke faces a rematch against Adem Bunkeddeko, who narrowly missed knocking her off last year. He raised $143,392 from the time he launched his campaign in late July through the end of September — beating the incumbent’s fundraising for the same period. Clarke brought in $114,824 in the quarter.

In another closely watched rematch, attorney Suraj Patel netted $100,698 in just 12 days after launching his campaign last month. Maloney got $303,760 in donations for the quarter.

Westchester Dems are pitching Chelsea Clinton on running for Rep. Nita Lowey's seat after retirement

New York Daily News

Top officials in the Westchester County Democratic Party were pitching Chelsea Clinton Wednesday on launching a 2020 bid for Nita Lowey’s seat in light of the longtime congresswoman’s retirement announcement, according to a party source familiar with the matter.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss closed-door deliberations, cautioned that Clinton hasn’t personally expressed interest, but said local party leaders were reaching out to her within hours of Lowey, 82, announcing she won’t run for reelection next year.

“If you’re a Clinton and you need a hook, this is a good one,” the source told the Daily News, noting that Lowey’s 17th congressional district includes Chappaqua, the ritzy Westchester suburb where Chelsea Clinton’s prominent parents live.

Reginald Lafayette, the county party’s chairman, did not return a request for comment and neither did a spokesman for the Clinton family.

Trump tries new defense in Syria furor: Insult the Kurds

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump on Wednesday minimized Turkey’s invasion of northeastern Syria as a land skirmish that does not warrant American intervention, and repeatedly insulted the Kurdish fighters who battled alongside U.S. forces to quash the Islamic State in the region.

During a pair of appearances alongside the Italian president, Trump glossed over the campaign against the Middle East terror group and instead mounted a vigorous defense of his widely condemned decision to allow Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's forces to push into Syria — where they have slaughtered the U.S.-allied Kurds and wreaked havoc that has resulted in the escape of hundreds of ISIS adherents from a detention camp.

“They're not angels, if you take a look," the president told reporters in the Oval Office of the Syrian Kurdish militias.

"You have to go back and take a look. But they fought with us, and we paid a lot of money for them to fight with us, and that's OK," he continued. "They did well when they fought with us. They didn't do so well when they didn't fight with us.”
