Teresa Tomlinson supports eliminating the filibuster

https://twitter.com/teresatomlinson/status/1159147796286574593

I concur; it protects us from the worst of the Republicans, but it forces into essentially a defensive game, rather than giving us the opportunity to get things done when we're in control.

Trump friend and radio host Michael Savage: "I was very disappointed in the president attacking whit

Media Matters

"MICHAEL SAVAGE (HOST): I was very disappointed in the president attacking white supremacy. He is now saying everyone who is concerned about the illegal alien invasion is a white supremacist? He suddenly has joined who? He's like Jake Tapper now, and the rest on CNN. That was a mistake, Mr. President. I am sorry. That is going to cost you thousands, if not tens of thousands of votes. Listen again to the big mistake Donald Trump made today by not listening to the right people, not having wise men around him, but having fools around him. "

Bullock: Right to bear arms in the Constitution

Jewish Insider

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Speaking to Jewish Insider on Wednesday, Steve Bullock broke from many of his rivals for the Democratic nomination, saying that he did not think the Supreme Court’s decision in D.C. v Heller was a bad decision and that the Second Amendment does contain an individual right to bear arms.

The statement came after a speech in which the Montana governor touted his support for measures like an assault weapons ban and universal background checks for firearms purchases in the aftermath of mass shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

In Heller, the court ruled for the first time that the Second Amendment to the Constitution did protect the individual right to bear arms for self-defense and overturned the District of Columbia’s ban on handgun possession.

However, Bullock’s remarks on Heller separated him from a number of other Democratic candidates, including Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) as well as former Congressman Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who have announced their support for reversing the landmark 2008 decision. In addition, Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2016, said she “disagreed” with the court’s decision in that case.

Trump says he sees 'no political appetite' to ban assault rifles

Source: Washington Post

President Trump said Wednesday that he is open to calling on Congress to return from recess to strengthen background checks for gun buyers but that he sees “no political appetite” for banning assault rifles.

Trump’s comments came as he left the White House for visits to Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso that risk stoking divisions rather than bringing the country together after a pair of mass shootings over the weekend.

Trump arrived in Dayton on Air Force One shortly before 11 a.m. and was greeted by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine (R) and other politicians from both parties. His motorcade then headed to Miami Valley Hospital “to thank first responders and hospital staff, as well as meet with victims and families,” the White House said. Reporters traveling with the president were not invited into the meetings.

Speaking to reporters before he left Washington, Trump dismissed critics who have suggested that his rhetoric on race and immigration is partly to blame for a rise in hate-inspired violence such as that in El Paso.

Alarms sounded inside the building as police squad cars, firetrucks and ambulanes converged on the scene. Law enforcement officers with rifles and body armor were patrolling the area and a helicopter hovered overhead.

The building houses the headquarters of USA TODAY, its parent company, Gannett Co., and offices for a variety of other businesses.

Fairfax County police tweeted around noon that they were responding to reports of a man with a weapon at the building. Officials provided no other details.

Progressive Democratic group that recruited AOC backs Joyce Beatty primary challenger

Source: Columbus Dispatch

WASHINGTON — The progressive organization that helped elevate Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to a primary victory has endorsed Rep. Joyce Beatty’s Democratic primary opponent.

Justice Democrats, the progressive organization founded by advisers to Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, announced Wednesday that it has endorsed Morgan Harper for Ohio’s 3rd Congressional District.

“Morgan Harper is part of a new wave of progressive Democrats pledging to reject corporate PAC donations and fight unapologetically for working people,” said Alexandra Rojas, executive director of Justice Democrats. “Morgan is building a grass-roots campaign to fight for solutions as big as the problems we face.”

Before announcing her bid for Congress, Harper, 36, was a senior adviser at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a consumer watchdog agency. She also served as a vice president at the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, which invests in under-resourced communities.

Just got a preliminary invite to the Houston debates.

Why do I have a feeling gun control will play a major role?

(Unfortunately won't be able to attend.)

John Hickenlooper: 'My fellow Democratic candidates are falling for Trump's distractions. I'm not'

Miami Herald

The clashes over immigration in the presidential debates may make for good television, but they don’t make good policy. The way in which most of my competitors for the Democratic nomination have approached the issue of immigration is contrary to both common sense and the goal of achieving meaningful reform. This is an unfortunate pattern on a range of issues that, if continued, could hand the worst president in our nation’s history a second term in office.

A new term has been introduced into the popular lexicon. “Section 1325,” now one of the better known provisions of Title 8 of the U.S. Code, provides that unauthorized entry into the United States is a crime. Most of my fellow Democratic candidates for president have followed Julian Castro’s lead in saying that Section 1325 should be repealed. While their intentions for taking this position are admirable, their logic leaves much to be desired. This may be where the perspective of the only candidate in the race who has served as both a mayor and governor is different from that of a legislator.

Members of Congress deliver speeches and lend their names to legislation; governors have to deliver results and solve problems. It’s a fundamentally different approach. Senators and representatives measure their progress by “outputs” — bills filed or enacted, points scored in a debate. As governors, we define success differently, focusing on outcomes. And those outcomes almost always require a combination of policy, politics, relentless implementation and coalition building.

Let me discuss that last one, coalition building. Defining the important issue of immigration in terms of Section 1325 not only is largely a distraction, it also is counter-productive. It ignores the need to rally the majority of Americans who support a humane immigration policy around common-sense immigration reform.
