Trump says he might attend Russian military parade

Source: Politico

President Donald Trump said Friday he's considering accepting Vladimir Putin’s invitation to attend Russia’s May Day parade, a military event held in Moscow commemorating the capitulation of Nazi Germany.

“President Putin invited me,” Trump told reporters on the White House lawn. “It’s a very big deal, celebrating the end of the war, etc., etc. A very big deal. I appreciate the invitation.”

Trump said his only hesitation in attending is that the parade falls during a pivotal time in the 2020 campaign.

“It is in the middle of our political season, so I will see if I can do it, but I would love to go if I could,” he concluded.

Internal NOAA emails detail blowback to Trump hurricane claims: 'This has really gotten out of hand'

Source: NBC News

Internal emails at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released Thursday showed how the agency scrambled to respond to President Donald Trump's inaccurate claims about Hurricane Dorian and Alabama.

The emails, dozens of which were obtained by NBC News in response to a Freedom of Information Act request, also detailed the blowback the NOAA received from both inside and outside the agency over a statement it put out bolstering Trump's claims over prior information from its own forecasters.

"These are getting very personal," Benjamin Friedman, the NOAA's deputy undersecretary for operations, emailed to two colleagues in response to an angry message he received in light of the agency's Sept. 6 statement.

The emails, which spanned a week in early September, took place as the president made and defended claims that Hurricane Dorian was likely to hit Alabama on Sept. 1 "much) harder than anticipated," contradicting forecasts that day, which showed the storm's path not to be near Alabama.

Former veterans commissioner Loree Sutton officially launches mayoral campaign (NYC)

Loree Sutton, a retired Army general and the former head of the city veterans’ affairs department, officially kicked off a campaign Thursday for mayor in 2021.

Sutton was the commissioner of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Department of Veterans Affairs until she stepped down late last month, and is now throwing her hat in her ring to replace her ex-boss.

“I am a roll-up-your-sleeves public servant who leads with heart,” Sutton, a Democrat, said in a launch video released Thursday. “I believe there’s nothing wrong with our city that can’t be fixed by what’s right with our city.”

Sutton is among the first candidates to officially declare in what is expected to be a crowded, and mostly male, 2021 mayoral field.

Sutton served in the military for more than 20 years, where she was an Army psychiatrist and rose to the rank of Brigadier General.

Two years out, there are now four announced candidates by my count. It's almost as if people wanted to get rid of Bill De Blasio.

Elizabeth Warren tells Bill Gates she'll explain her wealth tax to him

CBS News

Senator Elizabeth Warren said she would "love to explain" to Bill Gates how much he'd pay under her proposed wealth tax after the world's second wealthiest person said he believed he might pay $100 billion under the levy.

Gates, who added he was "just kidding" after making the remark, is just one of several billionaires who have spoken out against Warren's wealth tax, which would add a 6% surcharge on fortunes above $1 billion to raise money for her Medicare-for-all plan.

House releases transcript of testimony by top State Department official

Source: CBS News

Washington — The House has released the testimony of State Department official George Kent, who testified before the joint House committees conducting the impeachment inquiry on October 15.

Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, is also slated to testify on the first day of open hearings in the impeachment inquiry on Wednesday, along with William Taylor, the chargé d'affaires at the U.S. embassy in Kiev.

In emails included in a packet of documents given to Congress by the State Department's inspector general in early October, Kent expressed concerns about the campaign to discredit Marie Yovanovitch, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. In March, he called the emerging effort a "fake news driven smear out of Ukraine" and a "classic disinformation operation."

Harry Dunn parents say they rejected Trump offer of cheque

Source: The Guardian

The family of a 19-year-old motorcyclist killed outside a Northamptonshire RAF base in a crash involving the wife of a US diplomat have said compensation from Donald Trump will not resolve the matter.

The Dunn family’s spokesman, Radd Seiger, told PA Media that their meeting at the White House on 15 October ended with the president saying the secretary of the treasury, Steven Mnuchin, was “standing by ready to write a cheque”.

Seiger added: “It was almost as if he let it slip out. When he said: ‘We’ve got the driver here’, he basically meant we’re all going to have a big hug and a kiss and I’ll get my treasury guy to write a cheque. That’s how it was. On the day it just didn’t register with me, but the more I think about those words, the more shocking it is.”
