Trump facing 'historic political defeat' amidst virus, says Bush aide

President Trump is facing backlash for this coronavirus response, including his public remarks at a White House press briefing that suggested humans inject themselves with toxic chemicals as a cure. Former George W. Bush Speechwriter David Frum issues a warning, that Trump is “weak,” and is “headed toward an historic political defeat – one that will likely take the Republican Senate down with him.” In an interview with MSNBC’s Ari Melber, Frum implores Trump’s aides and staff to “use their power to prevent him from doing harm.”

Vaccines are not big money makers

For the conspiracy quacks saying covid19 was created so a few people could make big bucks off of vaccines. You folks lurking need to try harder:

The global total of all vaccines —for adults and children by all pharmaceutical companies that produce vaccines— represents only 2% to 3% of a trillion-dollar, worldwide pharmaceutical industry.

Aren’t Vaccines Just Moneymakers for Pharmaceutical Companies?
A popular myth is that vaccines are simply a way for pharmaceutical companies to make money. That is false. Vaccines are not huge profit-makers for pharmaceutical companies. In fact, these companies make their profits by selling drugs that treat diseases. For example, sales of the Sovaldi drug for Hepatitis C—just one treatment by one pharmaceutical company for one disease sold almost entirely in the United States— exceeded more than $10 billion in one year.

In comparison, the global total sales of all vaccines—for adults and children by all pharmaceutical companies that produce vaccines—was just $24 billion in one year. The $24 billion vaccine market seems large but represents only 2% to 3% of a trillion-dollar, worldwide pharmaceutical industry.

Another point of comparison is the global alternative medicine market. That market, which includes homeopathic remedies and various supplements, powders, and teas, is a $34 billion industry, even though only one-third of the treatments have been tested.

Why Are Pharmaceutical Companies Gradually Abandoning Vaccines?

ABSTRACT
During the past fifty years, the number of pharmaceutical companies making vaccines has decreased dramatically, and those that still make vaccines have reduced resources to make new ones. Pharmaceutical companies are gradually abandoning vaccines because the research, development, testing, and manufacture of vaccines are expensive and because the market to sell vaccines is much smaller than the market for other drug products. Congressional action could assure both a steady supply of existing vaccines and the promise of vaccines for the future.

I'm no Trump fan, but I think the media is misrepresenting this.

He didn't mean to actually inject the disinfectant. What he meant was remove the lungs, turn them inside-out, spray them with disinfectant and then use a UV light to dry them. Then turn the lungs right-side-out and put them back in. But you won't hear the media explain it this way, though. It doesn't fit their narrative.

This is the kind of pretzel logic I am seeing today.

American Migration Patterns Should Terrify the GOP Millennial movers have hastened the growth of lef

Derek Thompson
Staff writer at The Atlantic

Liberals in America have a density problem. Across the country, Democrats dominate in cities, racking up excessive margins in urban cores while narrowly losing in suburban districts and sparser states. Because of their uneven distribution of votes, the party consistently loses federal elections despite winning the popular vote.

The most famous case was in 2016, when Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election despite her 2.4-million-vote margin. Clinton carried Manhattan and Brooklyn by approximately 1 million ballots—more than Donald Trump’s margins of victory in the states of Florida, Arizona, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania combined.

But 2016 wasn’t a fluke. Neither was 2000, when Al Gore lost the election despite winning 500,000 more votes than George W. Bush. A recent paper from researchers at the University of Texas at Austin concluded that Republicans are expected to win 65 percent of presidential contests in which they narrowly lose the popular vote.

Have there been any demographic shifts in Florida towards Dems in the past few years?

I see a number of states moving in the blue direction like Georgia, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona. I know some of these states have a ways to go but they seem to be moving in our direction. Florida has been paper thin for either party since 2000. Why so little shift there?

Kavanaugh and Roberts Side with Liberals to Hand Environmentalists Huge Win; Alito Is Not Amused

by Colin Kalmbacher | 1:43 pm, April 23rd, 2020

Environmentalists scored a significant victory in the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday with help from some unusual suspects.

In a 6-3 opinion authored by Justice Stephen Breyer, two of the court’s conservatives–Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh–joined with the four-member liberal minority in order to strengthen a key provision of the Clean Water Act (CWA) of 1972.

Stylized as County of Maui v. Hawaii Wildlife Fund, the case stems from a lawsuit filed by “several environmental groups” in 2012 which alleged that Maui’s use of a wastewater reclamation facility ran afoul of the CWA by pumping roughly four million gallons of treated wastewater into the Pacific Ocean every day without a permit.

The permitting requirement is considered the heart and soul of the CWA’s overall regulatory effectiveness.

Under the CWA, a permit is required for the “discharge of any pollutant” into U.S. waters–which is defined as “any addition of any pollutant to navigable waters from any point source [or] any addition of any pollutant to the waters of the contiguous zone or the ocean from any point source other than a vessel or other floating craft.”
