Obama officials walked Trump aides through global pandemic exercise in 2017: report

The Obama administration walked incoming Trump administration officials through a hypothetical scenario in which a pandemic worse than the 1918 Spanish flu shut down cities like Seoul and London in early 2017, Politico reported.

During the briefing, Trump administration officials were told such a pandemic would likely lead to circumstances such as shortages of ventilators and that a coordinated national response would be “paramount,” according to documents obtained by the publication.

Of the Trump administration officials present during the meeting, about 66 percent no longer serve in the White House, according to Politico.

“The advantage we had under Obama was that during the first four years we had the same White House staff, the same Cabinet,” former Deputy Labor Secretary Chris Lu, who was present for the meeting, told the publication. “Just having the continuity makes all the difference in the world.”

"Thirty Trump officials attended the exercise (Cabinet and senior White House staff)," Lu added in a tweet on Monday. "But the vast majority of these officials are no longer in government

"When you're dealing with a crisis like #COVID19, stable and experienced leadership matters."

Republicans: 'Nobody Expected' the Coronavirus Pandemic. So Joe Biden Is Nobody?

Wanted to post this in GD but figured it would be locked:

By Jonathan Chait

President Trump, having stopped dismissing the threat of the coronavirus and calling criticism of his laggard response “their new hoax,” has begun insisting everybody was shocked. “It’s something that nobody expected,” he has said. Conservative pundits have picked up this revisionist history. “Armchair Quarterbacks Try to Rewrite History on Coronavirus,” argues National Review’s David Harsanyi. “Generalized ‘Trump didn’t take this seriously enough!’ stuff is ignoring the timeline, wherein every major Democrat didn’t take it very seriously until early March either,” insists Ben Shapiro.

One example of a major Democrat who took this seriously would be Joe Biden, who, as the party’s presumptive presidential nominee, is arguably the major Democrat. Biden wrote an op-ed on January 27 warning that Trump had left the country unprepared to handle the coronavirus outbreak, and proposing steps to counter it. One of his main advisers, Ron Klain, wrote an op-ed making similar points five days before that.

The primary defense made of Trump is to compare his laggard response against the straw-man alternative in which the only alternative was to close down everything three months ago. “Now we’re going to act as if politicians were negligent for failing to try to lock down the entire economy in early January?” writes Harsanyi mockingly. Obviously, there were numerous steps available short of a total lockdown. Indeed, the massive lockdown was only necessary because Trump failed to take any advance steps, like mobilizing an effective testing system, stockpiling masks and ventilators, and reconstituting some kind of structure to replace the pandemic response team he dismantled in 2018.

The “nobody could have known” defense memory-holes the fact that Democrats and Republicans were fiercely debating whether the government should be doing more in the very recent history. Trump’s stance, which he repeated constantly, was that the coronavirus had been contained, was likely to fizzle out, and would not be very harmful. The whole Republican position for weeks was that Democrats and the media were “doing everything they can to instill fear in people,” as Trump put it.

So just a few weeks ago many news sources were predicting as much as 70% of US Population

could become infected with millions dead, but now we are only hearing the 100,000 to 250,000 dead numbers that came from Fauci a few days ago. After this first wave subsides, if only a few million people get infected then we still have well over 300 million people who can get this. Without the social distancing won't it just go right back up? Did he suggest a transition to a blitz of testing come summer to keep tabs on who is getting it? I still don't think they are leveling with the American people as to how far we are from being out of the woods. Am I missing something? Can someone help me understand the strategies better?

Business Insider headline from mid March:

Multiple experts say up to 70% of Americans could be infected with the coronavirus and 1 million could die if no treatment is found — so people over 60 should 'stay home unless it's critical'

https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-150-million-americans-may-get-infected-2020-3

With so little testing and so many asymptomatic carriers, what are the best estimates for real cases

of covid 19? We are currently at about 250,000 KNOWN cases in the US with the bulk of those in NY. So are the actual numbers 3X as much 10Xs as much? I can't find anything giving a good assessment of this. Are there any reliable models that are trying to pinpoint the realistic numbers?

Is Bloomberg still planning on helping Biden?

Or has he lost too much in the stock market? We need a tsunami of ads exposing Trump's incompetence leading to more deaths than all the wars combined since WWII. They need to be relentless from now until Nov.

In Early February Army Memo Warned Of 150,000 Possible Coronavirus Deaths

Trump's inaction will likely lead to more deaths than all of the wars we have been in since WWII.

KEY POINTS
Army memo projected between "80,000 and 150,000" coronavirus deaths in the U.S.
That memo was originally distributed on Feb. 3
Trump recently admitted to being aware of the pandemic risk long ago
Latest estimates predict up to 240,000 American deaths

As the coronavirus death toll in the United States surpasses China’s, President Donald Trump and his administration have come under increased criticism over downplaying the pandemic’s danger and hesitating to take action. Now it’s come to light that in February officials in the Army had projected the disease could cause hundreds of thousands of American deaths — raising questions about when the government was aware of the impending crisis.

This week, the Daily Beast viewed an Army briefing memo drafted on Feb. 3 predicting “between 80,000 and 150,000” coronavirus deaths in the United States. At the time, this was filed as a “Black Swan” report, usually a label reserved for extreme, unlikely scenarios. Even still, it prompted Secretary of Defense Mark Esper to order the military to begin “prudent planning” to prepare for a response to the pandemic.

As of Thursday, coronavirus deaths across the country surged towards 5,000. This came with dire new projections that show as many as 240,000 could die during the pandemic. In less than two months, the Army’s worst-case scenario memo appeared to have severely underestimated the potential danger.

Although President Trump is seemingly beginning to acknowledge the seriousness of the pandemic publicly, he repeatedly played down the disease’s danger in February and March. At the time, he repeatedly disputed figures from health experts showing the coronavirus’ ability to spread, including a report from the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that 3.4% of those infected would die.

How We'll Beat The Coronavirus: EVERYONE Should Wear A Mask

MOTLEY CRUE STAR TOMMY LEE SHARES A SERIOUS OPEN LETTER TO DONALD TRUMP: "DEAR FU*KING LUNATIC!"

You may need a cigarette after reading this.

I think this screed has been updated to reflect more recent Trumpfuckwittery. Note: This was written by Craig Alan Wilkins and shared into popularity by Tommy Lee.

"An Open Letter to the president"....... A re-tweet from Mötley Crüe drummer, Tommy Lee, who soooooo wins the literary scribe of the day award........🤘🏽🤩🥳🤩🤘🏽 :

"Dear Fucking Lunatic,

At your recent press conference - more a word salad that had a stroke and fell down stairs, you were CLEARLY so out of your depth you needed scuba gear. Within minutes of going off air, your minions were backpedaling faster than Cirque De Soliel acrobats... In India a week ago, i couldn’t get past the bit about your being the most popular visitor in the history of fucking India — a country of a BILLION human souls that’s only 3000 years old, give or take.!!! Trust me - Gandhi pulled CROWDS.. You pulled a cricket stadium and half WALKED out...

Do you know how fucking insane you sound, you off-brand butt plug? That's like the geopolitical equivalent of “that stripper really likes me” — only 10,000 times crazier and less self-aware.

You are fucking exhausting. Every day is a natural experiment in determining how long 300 million people can resist coring out their own assholes with an ice auger. Every time I hear a snippet of your Queens-tinged banshee larynx farts, I want to scream!

We are fucking tired. As bad as we all thought your presidency would be when Putin got you elected, it’s been inestimably worse.

You called a hostile, nuclear-armed head of state “short and fat.” How the fuck does that help?

You accused a woman — a former friend, no less — of showing up at your resort bleeding from the face and begging to get in. You, you, YOU — the guy who looks like a Christmas haggis inexplicably brought to life by Frosty’s magic hat — yes, you of all people said that.

You attempted — with evident fucking glee — to get 24 million people thrown off their health insurance.

You gave billions away to corporations and the already wealthy while simultaneously telling struggling poor people that you were doing exactly the opposite.

You endorsed a pedophile, praised brutal dictators, and defended LITERAL FUCKING NAZIS!

Ninety-nine percent of everything you say is either false, crazy, incoherent, just plain cruel, or a rancid paella of all four.

Oh, by the way, Puerto Rico is still FUBAR. You got yourself and your family billions in tax breaks for Christmas. What do they get? More paper towels?

Enough, enough, enough, enough! For the love of God and all that is holy, good, and pure, would you please, finally and forever, shut your feculent KFC-hole until you have something valuable — or even marginally civil — to say?

You are a fried dick sandwich with a side of schlongs. If chlamydia and gonorrhea had a son, you’d appoint him HHS secretary. You are a disgraceful, pustulant hot stew full of casuistry, godawful ideas, unintelligible non sequiturs, and malignant rage.

You are the perfect circus orangutan diaper from Plato’s World of Forms.

So fuck you Mr. President. And fuck you forever.

Oh, and Pence, you oleaginous house ferret. Fuck you, too. You'll be as useful as a chocolate teapot against a medical crisis you Bible thumping cock socket."
