Attorney General Garland makes surprise visit to Ukraine

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Merrick Garland made an unannounced trip to Ukraine on Friday, a Department of Justice official said.

Garland visited the city of Lviv, the largest city in the western part of the country, at the invitation of Ukraine's prosecutor general to join President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and international partners at the “United for Justice Conference," the DOJ official said.

The attorney general held several meetings and "reaffirmed our determination to hold Russia accountable for crimes committed in its unjust and unprovoked invasion against its sovereign neighbor," the official added.

The trip was not previously announced for security reasons and it's unclear how Garland entered and exited Ukraine and how long he was there. Garland also made a surprise visit to the country in June 2022, just a few months after the war began.

White House slams GOP's Comer over comments about Beau Biden

Comer is a real asshole
https://twitter.com/MSNBC/status/1631327288804483081
https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/white-house-slams-gops-comer-comments-beau-biden-rcna73059?cid=sm_npd_ms_tw_ma&taid=6400c5fb17e32c0001e06b47&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

The underlying story is a little convoluted, but it involves U.S. Attorney David Weiss — who was appointed by Donald Trump — who prosecuted a Biden donor who made illegal contributions. There’s no evidence that the president or his team knew anything about the donor’s efforts, but Comer nevertheless appeared on a far-right podcast this week to argue, for reasons unknown, that Beau Biden — the former Delaware attorney general who died of brain cancer in 2015 — was caught up in the controversy.

“This U.S. attorney had had dealing, had an opportunity to go after the Bidens years ago. In fact, it was Beau Biden, the president’s other son, that was involved in some campaign donations from a person that got indicted as well,” Comer told Lou Dobbs. “But, you know, nothing ever happened. So I don’t know much about this U.S. attorney other than he’s had an opportunity to investigate the Bidens before and he chose not to. We all know that he’s just been silent for a long time.”

Kate Bedingfield, the White House communications director, appeared on MSNBC yesterday and called Comer’s rhetoric “appalling” and “despicable,” and she had a point. There’s no evidence connecting Beau Biden to the donor in question; Beau Biden can obviously no longer defend himself against baseless allegations; and if the Oversight Committee chairman has information implicating the late state attorney general in some kind of campaign finance controversy, the Republican has kept it to himself.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre added in her briefing, in reference to Comer, “To make the statement that he did is incredibly ugly and inappropriate.”

It’s no secret that the Oversight Committee chairman appears fixated on the president’s family, but given the Kentuckian’s latest comments, it seems Comer should choose a new hobby.

Biden administration lawyer may have saved student loan forgiveness plan at Supreme Court

The six MAGA nut cases want to gut the Biden student loan forgiveness but had no real legal basis to do so. The Biden solicitor general did a great job of making this clear

This attorney did an amazing job

The government’s top Supreme Court lawyer may have saved President Joe Biden’s $400 billion student loan forgiveness plan from what experts considered all but certain defeat.

Experts lobbed praise on Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, the lawyer who represented the Biden administration in front of the nine justices Tuesday.

“The Biden administration now seems more likely than not to win the cases,” said higher education expert Mark Kantrowitz.

“Her preparation, poise and power were impressive,” Kantrowitz said......

“She may have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat,” Shugerman wrote.

The nine justices considered two legal challenges to Biden’s plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for borrowers. Six GOP-led states — Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and South Carolina — had brought one of the lawsuits, and the other was backed by the Job Creators Network Foundation, a conservative advocacy organization.

Prelogar argued that the president was acting squarely within the law to avoid borrower distress during national emergencies and that plaintiffs had not shown in any way that they’d be harmed by the policy, which is typically a requirement to establish so-called legal standing.
